Women 'do not fear' heart disease

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers of women on Merseyside, yet many do not consider it as big a problem as cancer, health experts say.

A BBC-commissioned study found the life expectancy for women in Liverpool and Halton was 79.2 - a decade less than in Chelsea where they live the longest.

Dr Ewan Wilkinson said surveys show many women wrongly believe heart disease "is a man's illness".

The Experian research looks at age-related issues across… Continue

VA Med Center tests saliva diagnosis for heart attacks

A diagnostic tool to detect heart attacks using a person’s saliva is now being tested at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center through a collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine and researchers at Rice University’s BioScience Research Collaborative.

John T. McDevitt, professor of chemistry and bioengineering at Rice University, and his team of researchers have developed a microchip sensor called the Nano-Bio-Chip that processes saliva and yields on-the-spot results. McDevitt… Continue

Doctors discourage repeat calcium heart scans

Adding to recent controversy about CT heart scans, a new report says doctors shouldn't be doing so-called repeat calcium scans on a routine basis.

Such scans reveal buildup of calcium in the heart's arteries, which has been tied to heart disease, and they are becoming increasingly popular as screening tools in apparently healthy people. (See Reuters Health story of October 25.)

Repeating scans over time in the same person, researchers have argued, would give doctors an… Continue

Cholesterol and Triglycerides - What You Need To Know

Everywhere you turn, you are admonished to pay attention to your cholesterol (and to a lesser extent, your triglyceride) levels. Cholesterol and triglycerides are two forms of lipid, or fat, that circulate in your bloodstream. They are both necessary for life itself. Cholesterol is necessary for building and maintaining key parts of your cells (such as your cell membranes), and for making several essential hormones. Triglycerides, which are chains of high-energy fatty acids, provide much of the… Continue

Heart matters: Association encourages awareness during National Heart Month

February is recognized as National Heart Month. The American Heart Association is reaching out to the public during February, beginning with the Ninth Annual National Wear Red Day today to raise awareness on heart disease, but more specifically, heart disease among women.

TRMC-Sunnyvale offers tips for reducing the risk of heart disease

February is American Heart Month. To celebrate, Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale and Dr. Larry Moore, a cardiologist at Southwest Cardiac Associates in Mesquite, offer this advice for lowering the risk of heart disease:

U method finds heart disease earlier

By: Kali Dingman   Coronary heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Minnesota. Cardiologists, like Daniel Duprez, hope to stop this trend by using a different scoring system to detect heart disease before it attacks. As February marks American Heart Month, University of Minnesota cardiologists are tooting the Rasmussen score, developed at the University, as a more effective scoring ...

More Doubt on Link Between a Blood Chemical and Heart Disease

TUESDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Having high levels of the amino acid homocysteine won't raise your risk of developing heart disease, a new analysis indicates.

Infection, snoring, even diet soda may play havoc with your heart
